How Did the Results Come About?
Essentially the study was done by taking mice that were experiencing memory loss and giving half of them 500 milligrams of caffeine, as the other half were fed plain drinking water. The mice that were given caffeine for two months showed significant improvement during memory tests while the other mice showed an increase in memory loss. On top of this the mice that were fed caffeine had about half as much beta amyloid protein in their brains. Beta amyloid is the type of protein that causes clumps in the brain that can initially lead to severe memory loss.
What Does This Mean for Dementia Patients
These results are not only exciting because of the link to a decrease in memory loss, but also because caffeine can be used as a safe drug. Unlike many of the other medications for Alzheimer’s on the market, caffeine is very easy on the body and comes with little to no side effects at all. This is exceptional news especially during the current times and our often overmedicated society. Any time we can move from dangerous prescription drugs to a more natural treatment it is good news for all of us. There is still no word on the effectiveness of caffeine supplements, or true results or the effectiveness of caffeine, but this is sure to be the first step in a long and helpful process.
